Section 2 Engines, Boilers and Pressure Vessels

201. General

1. Exhaust gasses of internal combustion engines and boilers are to be discharged outside of all haz- ardous areas and exhaust outlets of internal combustion engines are to be fitted with suitable spark arresting devices.

2. Air intakes for internal combustion engines and boilers are to be located not less than 3 m away from hazardous space.

202. Installations in hazardous areas

1. Internal combustion engines are not to be installed in Zone 0 hazardous areas, as defined

RP 505.

2. When Internal combustion engines are installed in Zone 1 and Zone 2, such installation subject to special consideration. Fired boilers are not to be installed in hazardous areas.

203. Fire detection of machinery spaces

Spaces having boilers, fired heaters or engines are to be fitted with an automatic fire detection sys- tem that will secure the fuel to the space. Additionally, on manned platforms, the system is to sound an alarm.

204. Boilers and pressure vessels

1. Boilers and pressure vessels are to be designed, constructed and tested in accordance with the

American Society of Mechanical Engineers' "Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code", latest edition.

2. For boilers and fired heaters, firing arrangements are to be arranged so that fuel is automatically cut off on loss of flame.

3. When boilers and fired heaters using gas as fuel are located in an enclosed space, the space is to be adequately ventilated and it is to be fitted with an effective gas detection system; a fuel valve is to automatically close upon detection of gas.

4. Arrangements for using crude oil as fuel will require special consideration.

205. Diesel and gas turbine engines

Engines will be accepted on the basis of the manufacturer's guarantee, subject to the carring out of a satisfactory performance test witnessed by the Surveyor after installation. Engines and their in- stallation are to be to the satisfaction of the Society.

206. Ventilation of machinery spaces

1. Attention is to be given to ventilation inlet and outlet locations and air flow in order to minimize the possibility of cross contamination. Ventilation inlets are to be located in non-hazardous areas.

2. Ventilation for hazardous areas is to be completely separated from that for non-hazardous areas.
